Previous Award Winners

Since 2009, ifa has recognised personalities and institutions whose social, socio-political or artistic commitment has made an outstanding contribution to mutual understanding and appreciation. Past award-winners include Igor Levit, pianist, Federica Mogherini, former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Daniel Barenboim, General Music Director of the Berlin State Opera and the artist Yoko Ono. Organisations to have received the award include Human Rights Watch, the counselling centre for victims of digital violence HateAid, Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack and Notre Europe.

2022

Laureate: Osman Kavala, Human rights activist, patron of the arts and entrepreneur Laudatory speech: Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, Member of the Bundestag and former President of the Bundestag. 
Prize money recipient: Rengarenk Umutlar Derneği (Association of Colorful Hope), rights and freedoms of children in Southeast Turkey.

2021

Laureate: Igor Levit, Pianist and university professor.
Laudatory speech: Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and the Media and former Vice-President of the Bundestag.
Prize money recipient: HateAid, Counseling center for victims of digital violence.

2019

Laureate: Federica Mogherini, former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Laudatory speech: Heiko Maas, former Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Recipient of the prize money: Rondine Cittadella della Pace.

2017

Laureate: Silvia, Queen of Sweden.
Laudatory speech: Sigmar Gabriel, former Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Recipient of the prize money: Sociedade Beneficente Alemã.

2016

Laureate: Human Rights Watch, independent non-governmental organization.
Laudatory speech: Dr. Bärbel Kofler, former Federal Government Commissioner
for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid.
Recipient of the prize money: Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack.

2014

Laureate: Ernesto Cardenal, politician and theologian.
Laudatory speech: Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, former President of the German Bundestag.
